That's the problem with these tutorials. Rarely do they ever tell you how to troubleshoot things.

On the other hand, had you followed the instructions in courier-authlib's INSTALL, you would've verified userid/password validation even before installing Courier-IMAP.

Start with courier-authlib's INSTALL, and read it. When you get to the point where it tells you to read README_authlib.html, read that file too.
