Sounds like a misconfigured Xorg to me. What are the X logs saying about it?

Try my configs since our hw seems to be pretty similar changing resolution in
xorg.conf. My lapper can only do "1024x768": http://www.yazzy.org/configs/freebsd/thinkpad/ Send me your xorg logs if it does not help.
