Unfortunately, the system isn't busy - it's pretty much empty.
I've got the code running on a Sun box, and have just been trying to compile
it and get it running on a new Linux box.

That's just a generic error code used to return an authentication failure.
running the program as root, triple checked the username/passwords for the
database, and the authdaemon processes hve been kicked off.

How busy is the system? Sounds like you're using authdaemon. If your
system is loaded, sporadic authentication failures usually indicate the
need for more authdaemons, or more system resources.
