I am a long time courier maildrop user. The maildir format as supported by maildrop is a great format for its improvements over mbox formats and its compatibility. However, it also lacks some flexibility for managing email. For instance, things I would like to do include:

* Creating dynamic mail folders, e.g. a virtual folder of all messages with a particular header. The maildir format requires messages to be moved or copied there physically.

* Fast search. The maildir format requires an external index to do that.

Are there preferable solutions or work-arounds to achieve this? Or are there plans/projects in this direction? Afaik, current web clients and server-side mail handlers support static folders only.

I'd suggest taking up your question with DJB (Daniel J. Bernstein), the founder of the Maildir/ system directories, qmail and other "can't be bothered with prof-of-concept ideas I might once have had" inceptions.

And good luck.

Then again, you might try taking it up with Mark Crispin, the founder of the IMAP system infrastructure.

And good luck.

If all that fails, it's Sam Varshavchik's fault. Take it up with him directly.

He seems to be more amenable than the two former.

Best,
