HI All,
I have found what I believe to be a deficiency in Courier IMAP (at least with the courier imap included with the full courier email server)
The issue affects its useability with most clients (MS Outlook express is my specific interest)
Software used in my tests are as follows: Courier 0.34 and 0.35 with IMAP Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Microsoft Outlook Express V5 Netscape V4.77 on RedHAt 7.1 Washington IMAP on RedHat 6.2
Problem: When a new email arrives, Courier IMAP does not notify the client. I realise that this behaviour may be outside the rfc
It seems to be up to the client to "poll" Courier at an interval set into the client. In the case of Microsoft Outlook express, even when a poll has ocurred, you see the inbox count in the left pane but not the header in the inbox untill you either click off the inbox to another folder and back again or (found this accidentally) click the purge button. Using the Washington IMAP server, you do see the header in the INBOX, but only after the polling period set into the client.
Have you noticed with later version of O/E 5.5 that it tells you that you have new mail when in fact there isn't any.
In contrast, when using Outlook Express with Microsoft Exchange (in IMAP mode) when an email arrives, the client immediately beeps ( or whatever) and you see the email in your inbox. If you connect with a second client and share the account, you immediately see the message viewed, deleted or expunged in the first client.
I have observed the same problems with O/E 5.5 when an Exchange server is used as can be observed with UW-IMAP and Courier-IMAP. I couldn't believe this at first, then I put it down to a poor design of O/E's IMAP implementation. Earlier versions of O/E 5 seemed to work reasonably well. In contrast I have tested Outlook 98 and it seems to behave really well with Courier-IMAP and would probably do so with UW-IMAP because it uses NOOP to determine if there is any new mail. If you observe O/E on the otherhand when it is polling for new mail it requests (MESSAGES UNSEEN). And then you get told that you have received as many New-Emails as there are messages that haven't yet be flagged as SEEN. This occurs on MS-Exchange TOO!. I have experimented with O/E's msoe.dll and hacked the UNSEEN and replaced it with RECENT. Much better behaviour can be observed with O/E.
I have recently downloaded IE6 O/E6 onto my system. After making the hack to msoe.dll I have observed that it behaves much better than Version 5.x of O/E. Where I have noticed the difference is that when the Courier-IMAP server disconnects the O/E connection after it has been idle for 30-minutes the next poll at the specified interval correctly downloads the mail and notifies the user - you must have the INBOX "Synchronisation Setting" set to something other than "Don't Synchronize" whereas with O/E 5 it doesn't bother to tell you anything.
Now, what was the IDLE option in the IMAP spec for!? If only O/E would behave reasonbly as an IMAP client !
I suspect that Exchange Servers with different patch levels applied will yield differing results though I don't have access to many Exchange servers.
Cheers,
Larry.
