Could this patch be related to the lockups I've been experiencing when trying to play sounds on recent -current kernels?

Sound (dsp, etc) hasn't worked for at least a couple of weeks now...

No. Prezeroing of pages in SMP mode was not enabled before Mar 1 1998 04:18:50 UTC, which is less than a couple of weeks ago.
