ain't showin' up here. rebuilt all of ports tree a couple of daze ago. rebuilt gnome-utils just now no show

Then check with gnome-menu-editor or the like to see if you've hidden it.

no such luck. GNOME-DB Front End is the only entry

Under Applications > Accessories? There should be nine entries in a stock GNOME 2.14 desktop. I'd check /usr/X11R6/share/gnome/applications, and make sure things like gedit.desktop, gnome-screenshot.desktop, and gnome-terminal.desktop are properly installed.
