Subject:JDBC UTF8 encoding and collation errors?

I'm trying to upgrade to MySQL 4.1.7 with ConnectorJ 3.0.12 and I'm getting this error:

"Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation '='"

Any idea whats going on here? I could try upgrading to 3.0.16 but I have to apply some patches WRT non-closing ResultSets first... so I don't want to do this if I can avoid it.

Any ideas on this one?

I played with the connectionCollation JDBC property and set it to latin1 but it didn't take I think. The dox say this was added as of 3.0.13 but the changelog says 3.0.12...
