Hi David,

Thanks very much for your prompt and thought-provoking reply! Comments below....

I've been developing a build system for boost (www.boost.org) based on Jam that is designed to handle problems like the ones you're describing, but have not thrown any really huge build jobs at it yet.

I downloaded "build_system_2001_6_18.zip" and have read a little bit about your system.

A more recent version in available via anonymous CVS from sourceforge under the boost/tools/build module.

I will read more about it when I get a chance. It looks very interesting. With the large amount of JAM source we have in our workspaces and with lots of vocal engineers, I am a bit leery of adopting anything that will require major changes to our users' Jamfile code,

I wouldn't suggest it, at least not at this point. You have a large and stable system. Boost.Build is just getting up to speed.

but I am not dismissing Boost.Build out of hand. I will familiarize myself with it before making any big decisions about it. So you can probably count on some naive questions from me on this list when that happens. :-) At the very least, I expect to learn some new things while digging into Boost.Build. Thanks for your efforts on this project!

If you think it holds real promise for your work, your feedback (and especially code contributions) would be much appreciated.

More later, I'm swamped at work right now ;-)
