The chosen form should handle plural correctly with the help of gettext. From an example of the gettext info :
In Polish we use e.g. plik (file) this way: 1 plik 2,3,4 pliki 5-21 pliko'w 22-24 pliki 25-31 pliko'w
I think Sqwebmail language strings are mostly either whole phrases, or labels/column headings. Does sqwebmail have any cases where English singular+plural forms are generated dynamically? If not, then this level of sophistication wouldn't be needed for translations either.
Currently, sqwebmail does manage plural forms in a primitive fashion, but don't use plural much. You just have few strings like
XXX unread message(s)
in folders listing.
I don't speak Polish myself, so I have no idea if Polish has such generic single/plural/etc. habit.
In French, you can translate this string with "XXX message(s) non lu(s)" which will be understanded by people. But some words in French have more complicated plural, like "cheval/chevaux" (horse/horses) and to write "XXX cheva(l|ux)" is not good.
In German too, some plurals form are complicated, for example, "Buch/Bücher" (book/books, notice the umlaut over the "u").
So, primitive singulal/plural handle may cause problem in some languages, at least for some strings. Even if theyre was no problem yet, a modification of the template system using gettext should be extendable to handle plural correctly in the future.
What do the numbers 1-31 in your example represent? My first reaction was that Polish seems to have a different plural form depending on whether you have 21 beans or 22 beans :-)
Yes, it has. According the info file, most slavian languages have plural form according the last digit of the number or the last two digits or the number itself.
Some other languages also have special cases but not has hairy, you can have a list in the gettext info page here:
