Some Operating Systems (and Distributions) work better on specific platforms.

I have found OpenBSD to be very good for SUN systems.

If OpenBSD had suppport fot the Enterprise 3000, I would recommend it.

But, it does not seem to. http://www.openbsd.org/sparc64.html#hwdocs

As for Linux, I have only found 2 distributions that have Enterprise 3000 support: Debian Suse

Remember that Sun's stuff will never be as fast as Linux, just much more expensive and have nicer boxes ;-).

Does Solaris 8 allow you to recompile the kernel ?

If it does, you may need recompile it to maximize multiprocessor preformance.

If not, I look for a performance patch for your multiprocessor system.
