I am severely confused and I don't know if I've missed something but...

Doing a fresh clean install of Courier-Authlib like this: user$ tar -xjvf courier

Courier Authlib downloads are usually named courier-authlib and not courier, which is the mailserver download.

You must download authlib seperately, compile and install it. Looks like you've downloaded the mailserver download and it won't compile unless authlib is compiled and configured on your system.

Try the download at http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/courier/courier-authlib-0.59.3.tar.bz2

Then again, you could have deliberately altered the commands you quoted just to confuse everyone!

Sorry, I was intending to be concise rather than verbose.. for all references to courier, see courier-authlib instead. It is only the authlib I'm talking about in this case.
