James A Baker writes:
The list of response codes in RFC 2821 doesn't list 513 -- unless I'm just *completely* blind. So why are you using it instead of one of the listed codes? ... Maybe there's some supplementary spec that I should have read too?? Is there? I'll read it, if you point it out.
You are wrong because neither 513, nor 514, nor 569, nor any other reply code is an invalid indication of a failed command. It's crystal clear that any reply code 5yz indicates that the command failed.
I'm sure it is crystal clear for you, Sam, but it still violates RFC which clearly states valid respones to RCPT command in SMTP session. 513 is not one of them. It doesn't say anywhere that ANY 5xx response is valid. It gives specific list of valid responses.
RCPT S: 250, 251 F: 550, 551, 552, 553, 450, 451, 452 E: 500, 501, 503, 421
Changing this 1 character in code will: * Make courier more compliant with RFC; * Make many users happier, and therefore the world better place; * Stop this rediculous argument.
Is it because you don't like to be wrong? Come on, Sam, that's the idea of new versions - fixing bugs and broken logic - and it's the simplest possible thing to change. The ratio between the effort and achievement is 1:1000000 at least! So what's holding you back?? Any specific reason?
