Hi,

I never really did understand what, if anything, really uses those *START variables in the config files.

These can be used i.e. in distributions like SuSE Linux, where (at least some) startups are controled by an global config-file. Every rc-script includes the global config file (quite slow, as you can imagine :-/ ) requests it's according variable and starts (or omits - depending on this setting) the associated program / daemon. *Why* you would use them... that's another story (and one I don't know ;) )...
