i had a similar problem..... when i first set mine up there were a bunch of authentication modules listed in the authdaemonrc file.....

i think one of them was causing grief, anyhow, i trimmed it down to authmodulelist="authpam"

which is all i plan on using for now

I can telnet to the server: telnet localhost 143

It says that Courier-Imap is ready

Then I try to login: a001 LOGIN pnolan password

And it says a001 NO Login failed

So I take a look in the logs and it says:

Mar 4 09:57:04 houstonlinux imapd: Connection, ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1] Mar 4 09:57:21 houstonlinux imapd: LOGIN FAILED, ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1] Mar 4 09:57:34 houstonlinux imapd: LOGOUT, ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1]
