We cut our internal mail system from sendmail/cucipop/uw-imapd to exim/courier a week ago and it's been an almost flawless transition.

Just configure exim to do it's local_delivery to maildir mailboxes and that's basically it.

Word of warning: if you use quotas, you may run into problems with huge numbers of ReadDir operations. I use Exim but have now switched to using deliverquota for local delivery for this reason, rather than Exim's built-in maildir capability.

I am in the process of patching deliverquota so that it can drop a quota warning message into the user's mailbox at 90% full, and create maildirs if they don't exist.
