Actually, it turns out that this is because the user in question is not supposed to login, and so has his shell set to /bin/false. Is there anyway I can get maildrop to run for a user like this without changing his shell?

maildrop: error writing to filter. maildrop: Unable to filter message.

# ls -als .mailfilter; cat .mailfilter 4 -rw------- 1 phoult quser 45 Jul 16 18:37 .mailfilter DEFAULT="$HOME/Maildir/" xfilter "spamc -f"
