I've been trying to upgrade to FF9.0.1 on my dual-core 8.2-stable

parallel builds?
How many cores do you have? I regularly build firefox on 8 core boxes,
without problems. I just upgraded from 9.0 to 9.0.1 and it did work.
Perhaps it's one of the options causing the failure?
