I don't think that there is anyway that Google could reasonably build out, say a national GSM/GPRS network. The costs of building out their own wifi/voip network would be rather high as well. One must never underestimate hubris, but my guess is if Google wins part of the spectrum, then they will lease out the bandwidth to others and then piggy back that network with their own services. Owning part of the spectrum buys them leverage to possibly change things, while a device itself holds no leverage.

I would not be surprised to see these developments regardless of whether Google wins the auction. Either way, they are changing the game for the other carriers. Forcing people to look further down the road and see things they might not have been looking at.

How about a device that replaces or augments the navigation system in a motor vehicle. With on board GPS and MapView. Why not? This combined with the other WiFi, Bluetooth, Phone, Web, and any other things that we come up with, makes it a pretty good fit for an in-dash, or on-dash option.
