Hi Paul,

I am not wedded to the current build but would not like to replace it with a less functional "almost" equivalent.

Definitely. In fact the opposite should be the case. Gradle should be chosen by the virtues it provides not just by the fact that it is based on Groovy.

I suspect the timing to make such a change is from 1.7 onwards. That way we can jettison most of the current 1.4 jdk related bits to the build and get a cleaner fresh start with Gradle. The ant build can remain in place and let us push out 1.6.x interim releases if need be. Then use Gradle (presuming it is given the nod by then) to push out 1.7 betas etc. That gives us a little bit of time to get things in place.

This makes a lot of sense to me. I think I have a pretty good impression now where the Groovy team (the ones who have voiced their opinion) stand in regard to this. It seems there is an openness to have a serious look at a Gradle based Groovy build. I appreciate this very much. Now it is my turn to provide a Gradle Groovy trial build. And if the people like it, it can be used for 1.7.

Cheers,

- Hans
