Hm, strange. Good to see that you're right, there are "450 Service temporarily unavailable." errors sent out.

Many of them are followed by a msg="502 ESMTP command error",cmd: DATA so I only saw 5xx when looking over the logfile this morning. I assume that this is a misbehaving MTA that sends out further commands after the 4xx error message.

This is actually normal, with ESMTP PIPELINING, but gets logged anyway.

Having courier accept messages and drop them into the queue is not possible, is it?

No. That's the whole point.
