To be entirely fair to the development team (and mysql generally) it should be noted that (a) their tool works fine and does what is "written on the tin" and (b) that it is free to use for us developers not working for some software giant with squintillions of dollars...

In particular, the (b) point is of value to me: I'm trying to get my start-up off the ground, but before the VC's will part with any cash I have to prove the concept works, and were it not for 'free' software (be it open-source or community editions) I would never get anywhere.

It goes without saying that once I'll be generating revenues I will only be too glad to licence the "Enterprise" version of whatever software we'll be using and sort of repay my debt of gratitude: for sure, Redmond will see very little of it, if I have any say on what my servers run on...

It's a sort of Catch-22 and I'm glad that some companies are clever enough to find within them the resources to break the circle. And it should work well for all involved, hopefully.

Hello to all.

So why not work on MySQLCC to become a better software? why make these new tools? I think MySQLCC is a good software, not the best maybe, but it is usefull.

So maybe working on fixes and adding new features will be a better way.

There are probably a couple of reasons. We thought it would be better to have several tools than a single one that does all because it scales better and not everyone needs all features. Another point is that we wanted to do create native versions of the most important tools. So we are using different technologies now - instead of using qt as toolkit for example the linux version uses gtkmm, and the windows version was built using delphi.
