My Windoz ME computer died so I bought one with XP pro. I downloaded and installed Apache 2 and MySQL 4 among other programs. As these installed, they both boot when the computer boots.

I want them to run when I want them to run - not all the time.

Since I couldn't find Apache or MySQL in any startup directory, I ran msconfig. I unchecked both. Now neither runs at bootup. In fact neither runs at all. Not with WinMySQLadmin nor with mysqld (or mysqld-NT).

What is the trick to running them when I am ready?
