You need only the OpenLDAP libraries to get Courier to compile with LDAP support, after that you can use any LDAP server to authenticate and find relevant details from. I guess that installing OpenLDAP would be one way to get all the libraries on your system. You may want to do that but not run the OpenLDAP server if you already have a working LDAP server.
