Run memtest to check for bad RAM.

It's a virtual server running on vmware, so I know that that RAM is good. The host server has been up and running for months and passes memtest.

Also, the failure happens in exactly the same place every time.

How much ram and swap space does the guest have? I would recommend increasing the amount of swap space temporarily. GCC seems to have a bug that causes it to balloon out of control on compiling esmtpclient.c, grabbing nearly a gig of ram. However, it should just take a while to compile rather than errorring out. Maybe your swap space is having hard drive issues or your running into a VMWare bug (though I've sucessfully compiled Courier on a RHEL5 guest machine running on VMWare Server 1.0.2 running on Vista). What version of VMWare are you using? Which OS did you choose for the guest config?
