when a smtp-connect is made to courier, it takes a long time until it responds with "220 <servername> ESMTP". in the beginning, i assumed that this is related with non-existing dns-entries. but now, everything should be entered correctly and it still takes longtime (about 40 sec). what is wrong with my configuration?

Either the forward/reverse DNS is not set up, or the identd lookup times out.

forward and reverse dns is set up correctly. i didn't change anything in identd configuration. might this behaviour be caused by a restrictive firewall?

Yes. If the firewall drops packets to the identd port.
