From using exchange and courier imap, I can see that exchange seems to send a total number of emails to the client, and then the first 100 email headers (or so). With the mozilla/etc mail clients, the program downloads a list of email headers from email 1 to email 50,000. If IMAP transfers 400 headers a second, then it takes 3 minutes to download all the headers. Compared to exchange, this is not good enough.

Well, then, go and fix "mozilla/etc mail clients" to not download all the headers of every message when the folder is opened.

What is stopping courier from being as fast as exchange? Cant I setup

Nothing. It's not the server's fault that the clients are written poorly.

Not a server issue.

Try opening the same folder with pine. Pine will open the folder in one or two seconds.
