I am currently trying to decide on a configuration tool for our company and have whittled the list down to ClearCase with ClearQuest and PVCS Version Manager with PVCS Tracker. In theory I like ClearCase but PVCS is much cheaper and we could probably get by with it so I have some justifying to do.

I contacted the ClearCase User Group and someone recommended Perforce. I be very grateful if anyone can be bothered to give me some indication of their satisfaction with Perforce and some idea of how long it took to get the tool up and running. Is there a Problem Tracking tool that integrates with Perforce at all? We want to introduce an electronic fault reporting facility. Also we'd hope to use Perforce from within Visual C++ 6.0. IS this possible.

I've just started as a perforce administrator, and while I admit the concepts behind it seem non-intuitive at first, it is a nice system. We are currently supporting 75 users on with the perforce server sitting on a Sparc 5 (!) and it just keeps going and going.

Be prepared to use a lot of disk space tho. We've had to upgrade our raid system twice since we make a new branch for each release and product within the depot.

Another product you may want to look at is SoftBench from HP. I admin'd it at my last job and it was super-easy. Edit 2 config files and turn it on. I left the job for 18 months, came back and nothing had needed to be changed. It integrates well with Visual Studio. Is Y2K compliant.
