Andras and Bill covered this pretty well but I have a couple comments.

Hi all, I was inspired to take a break from work an do this. I'm doing good in 2004. I got over the ear infection and now have a painful stiff and swollen right knee. I guess I'm on my last legs. ;-)
I thought I'd get the discussion going here on what to do with Quanta. I have mixed feelings. Over all I'm happy it's so well received and has made such great strides... I'm also really frustrated that so much more I wanted to do didn't make it into 3.2. That's okay. Heres what we will want to do.
1) Look at a good time to introduce decent feature enhancements for a BE release for 3.2 and KDE 3.1 users. My guess is we may want to do this by early Feb but the first thing is to see 1A) what we really feel we need to change after release that can be done quickly 1B) what new features are coming along that might be released like debugging or VPL updates 1C) a generally desirable release situation
2) We need to look at releasing a 3.3 release prior to KDE 3.3. This means we need to determine the feature set we consider worth a full release and the date as well as supplemental issues like if we branch CVS to keep it clean and how long we test. My inclination is some time between April and August.
Uh... I'm confused. If Quanta and assoc. aren't being released with KDE, then shouldn't it be in kdenonbeta or extragear? Not to mention translations will be kinda messy.
See Andras' answer. We *are* being released with KDE. Even more fun... this is no longer us asking Dirk if we can be part of KDE, now it is many KDE core developers proudly setting us forward as an example leading application. So we really have to think about the accrued capital of our reputation in the community. Supplemental releases will be critical because they will increase enthusiasm and because we are poised to begin a rapid advance with much of our foundational work in place and with more developers and resource assets.
We should strive for three month release frames and not less than twice a year. Many smaller aspects of the project run at much faster rates than the over all KDE release schedule.
3) We need to begin planning for our next official release with KDE.
The attached Knowit file is not meant to be complete but a start and everyone is invited to edit and resubmit it.

Weeee! This is a fun week! :-D
Then you're not waiting in the corner for harsh criticisms for being less than perfect. ;-)
First off, I want to hit templates, since they're the most there-but-not-there feature. A contest would be wonderful. Whatever the details, they can be discussed later. Only thing I would really recommend is requiring them to be placed in the public domain via creative commons for obvious reasons.
It was late when I did this, so I forgot something. We will shortly have an on line resource access from Quanta. The idea is that we can't really ship everything with Quanta that you could use because hopefully it will become too ponderous soon. Of course that is where I have been standing up talking about the coming deluge of template for a year and looking like an idiot since we haven't had them. Perhaps making it as easy as falling off a log and offering some first examples will start it. I thought we'd never see donations and that changed dramatically in 2003.
If someone can think of some good contest idea I'm all ears. We need to handle resources with the new site design. My personal web design company has been on hold but I'm also thinking of offering dual license resources (free for personal use, small one time charge for commercial) on that site as a means of funding development. Part of the idea will be that a company can set up their own resource repository too and their development team can access it.
Templates and other resources need to have the following access tree: * Quanta master repository * Commercial resource repositories (if someone wants to incorporate Quanta into a service business) * Development team (private) repositories * Global (common denominator basic resources shipped with Quanta) * User (what the user installs) * Project
We will want to use something like the upload widget to select resources to copy to user or project.
That's all I've got, since I just woke. :-)
Everything else looks great!
Oh come on, make more work for me. ;-)
