I've noticed in the registry that .dat is listed as an extension to skip during regular operation, but not during initial indexing, which may be your problem. Check out HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Desktop. I'm not sure if the reg list overrides plugins, but I'm guessing it does. You could have your plugin modify the reg key when installed.
