I've had various versions of mysql running on Windows 2K Server service pack 2 and higher and never seen this problem myself. I highly doubt there is a problem with mysql's compatibility with 2k server as a production server I know of has been up for the last 4 months with nary a hiccup, and certainly no issues with mysql.

I have attempted to install on a couple machines in different configurations and now tried by wiping the drive, installing 2000 server fresh with defaults and installing mySQL
on that. In each case when I attempt to start it it freezes the machine. Whether I start as sevice or as console, same effect. During the attempted start it creates the first logfile and then "crash." It installs and runs fine on an XP pro laptop. Is there a known compatibility issue with Server 2000?
Makes one wonder what is odd about that machine.
I have personally install mysql 4.0.x on about 10 windows 2000 server and pro machines without any problems.
You say it creates the "first logfile," which leads me to believe you are using INNODB tables. Try it without InnoDB support and see if it works.
Which "server" EXE are you installing? And are you using the --install option to make it a service?
