I have done a bit more searching and found the following in another log file:

Apr 9 11:17:53 mail authdaemond.lda[357]: [ID 102864 daemon.crit] ldap_simple_bind_s failed: Protocol error Apr 9 11:20:52 mail last message repeated 3 times

So I take this to mean that courier is for some reason not able to bind with my ldap service. In my authldaprc file it says "CLEARPW is the clear text password. CRYPT is the crypted password. ONE OF THESE TWO ATTRIBUTES IS REQUIRED. If CLEARPW is provided, and libhmac.a is available, CRAM authentication will be possible!

I am a little confused about libhmac.a. Do I only need it if I am using LDAP_CLEARPW or do I need it for LDAP_CRYPTPW also? If I do need the file where does it need to reside? The file is in the source directory, can I just copy it to where it needs to reside?

The error is what is posted in the syslog. I have also checked the the system messages but do not see anything more.

Did you look if anything was logged in syslog?
