Hmm, had exactly the same problem today - wish I remember what I did to solve it...
As I recall I installed it as as service (/bin/mysqld -install) then I started and stopped it a couple of times.

Hello:
Can not seem to get MySQL working... getting some error about unable to connect even if I try to get a version outta it. It is simply dead. Been through all the documentation and spent the last couple of hours trying to get it to simply connect.
The error was something like, I can not connect to localhost check to see that port 3306 is open via telnet etc. the error was like number 100006?
Please help!
