Resolv.conf is ok. I've done a ktrace & tcpdump, and it seems courier is trying ipv6 lookups on loopback interface only (not ethernet) and not ipv4 at all. I'm currently recompiling courier without ipv6 support, which on a 50mhz Sparc will take a while :)

Just for the archives, disabling ipv6 worked. My courier is now working as it should.
