My "sharing" between operating systems is only for the purpose of a single point to get to the plaintext password. I too am a proponent of keeping environments separate.
Thanks for the appreciated feedback.
If anyone is interested, I have an HTML paper I wrote on this very subject for our users here at ChannelPoint that describes in more detail how this system works...

The method I recommend is to have a shared directory between your Unix and NT environments that only your user account has access to (directory access permissions). This way, you can use P4CONFIG to point to that file that's in that shared protected directory. The only contents of that file would be "P4PASSWD={whatever}".
Your idea about putting "P4PASSWD" in a P4CONFIG file is an excellent way to hide the password while keeping it in place view.
However, sharing a workspace between unlike platform types is a recipe for trouble: the Unix client brings down text files as Unix text, the NT client brings down text files as NT text. It can cause problems if you "p4 sync" in one environment and edit/submit from the other environment.
Still, the "P4PASSWD in a P4CONFIG" file is a dandy idea. (I recommend something like it when I teach Perforce classes.)
