There's not really any good way around this. Your best bet is to minimize it on branches other than the mainline.

That doesn't _really_ help, because in my (limited) experience, the mainline is the one that has needed the most renames.

The same limitation has bitten me, e.g. when the mainline needed to have a directory split up because it eventually contained _far_ too many files. Integrating changes back from a bugfix branch sucks after mainline reorg.

p4 rocks, but isn't perfect.
