Thanks Sam.

I understand now. I do have another question. I'm trying to run couriermlm outside the context of the .courier and .courier-default mechanism. If I were to run couriermlm from within a mailfilter file, for example, how would I do that?

I tried running couriermlm ctlmsg but I get an error "Invalid address". Is that due to the DEFAULT environment variable not being set to the particular command? I have in my mailfilter file,

to "|/usr/lib/courier/bin/couriermlm ctlmsg /var/spool/mail/couriermlm/list"

I see in the documentation that couriermlm supports either "all" or "mod" modes for subscribing. There is no way to have a confirmation mode?

I don't want to send subscribe requests to the moderator, but I also don't want anyone blindly subscribing to a list.

You misinterpreted the "all" option. Anyone _can_ subscribe, they just have to confirm it. With "mod", the subscription requests are vetted by the moderator first before they receive the confirmation request.
