How does one make Courier IMAP use checkpassword for authentication when the checkpassword software was installed after Courier IMAP? Is a recompile necessary or can I just add text to the AUTHMODULES line in the config

file?

That's because Courier-IMAP does not use checkpassword, and never did.

According to the docs for Bruce Guenter's relay-ctrl, Courier IMAP does use, or at least can be made to use, checkpassword. Plus it looks like there is code for using checkpassword in Courier IMAP's authlib directory (I'm using 0.99).

So, what can I do to make Courier use checkpassword?
