/etc/userdb/* is not read by any daemons, only by the makeuserdb
utility which in turn generates userdb.dat and userdbshadow.dat.
The message indicates you are not using the authdaemond-enabled
imapd but an older version which was compiled --without-authdaemon.
I am sure I do. Authdaemond is running when I do a ps -ef.
Check the timestamp on the binary, make shure authdaemond.plain is
running, and use the authtest utility.
I did that ! It is running ! Authtest fails and I have no way of
determing why.

You could also configure everything --without-authdaemon, but then
you have to set userdbshadow.dat world readable for imapd.
Not really what I have in mind.
