The line is there. ldconfig was re-run as root.

same result when building ... L/usr/lib/qt-3.1/lib -L/usr/X11R6/lib /usr/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.a -lqt- mt -lXext -lX11 -lm -lpthread /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXext collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [mysqlcc] Error 1

Check that /usr/X11R6/lib is in /etc/ld.so.conf and re-run 'ldconfig' (as root).

Guess I should give up for now. If it's helpful I am willing to keep trying suggestions though.
