The only way to truly be sure what the behavior will be is to mock it up with a Java program that just does a socket connection to some server somewhere...and test it under various conditions. That way you can isolate the behavior.

I have noticed that my Windows 2000 box does not respond well to loosing an ethernet connection, and in some cases the network interface has to be disabled and then enabled for it to pick up the fact that the network is available again :(
