You mentioned the user's .courier file. Keep in mind that if the .courier file exists, it will override the DEFAULTDELIVERY setting. Remove the user's .courier entirely and see what happens.

Yep, that was it... so so simple I couldn't see it. I thought it was $HOME/.mailfilter (missing or not) that was the key factor.

Thank you for putting me out of my self-induced misery, and the tip about 'to ./Maildir' not being needed. I will put together a howto for this nice courier+bogofilter setup and publish it somewhere.
