Thanks for the speedy answer Sam. Sorry I didn't put that extra bit of info in. The user logs in as pet@domain.com.au and vmailmgr separates the two bits of info to determine the base unix user and the virtual pop mailbox..... I think I am seeing where the answer will lie.... return the real unix user from authvmailmgr perhaps.

Mmmm, think I'll also post this one to the vmailmgr mailing list.

This is good that it give bytes retrieved but the virtual user name could be in several domains (and thus several Unix accounts).

The logged userid is taken directly from the login userid. Someone logged in as 'peter', and that's what you got.
