BRIEF VERSION Is it possible to use Perforce with OpenVMS/Alpha as the server and NT PC's as the clients and still have the full GUI support features you might find with a Unix server/NT PC client combination. If it is not, is there a tool that does.
I don't think so. Looking at the current download page,
http://www.perforce.com/perforce/loadprog.html
I see clients for VMS, but no servers.
You could probably take one of the machines your PC developers have cast off, load FreeBSD (or Linux) on it, and use that for the server. You'd be astonished at the performance you can achieve on moderately low-end hardware.
DETAILED VERSION I have joined a project quiet recently, they are about 18 months in and have approx two years left to run. We are producing a real time system running OpenVMS on an Alpha (mainly). For development, we use the Alpha as a server and network PC's as clients running Exceed and Kea. A portion of the development is being carried out on a Unix server, again with the same PC based clients. Part of my role is to introduce formal Software Configuration Control across the systems and provide various build tools.
Why not put the Perforce server on your UNIX system? Do you have a need to run the server on the VMS system?
To date they have developed the Alpha sub-systems and kept each sub-system in seperate CMS library (Unix sub-systems are just starting up). The life cycle of the system will be 25 years.
Before joining the project I had not used VMS or the DECset tools. From what I can tell they are all using CMS and some are using MMS, predominantly in there command line format with experienced users (about 5% of the team - not very good) writing there own scripts. I need to provide facilities for programmers and users. For the user group, facilities must be as simple and flexible as possible and not require a detailed understanding of OpenVMS or DECset or any other development system.
Ugh, CMS/MMS. I'd hoped that would have died, along with VMS. I guess not. If I were to suddenly be elected tools meister, I jump in with both feet and stick Jam/MR in there, too.
So what I need is a proper Software Configuration Management and build facilities. Does/will/can Perforce provide me with the equivelent tools I would buy if I had a unix or NT server (i.e. all the GUI's).
Perforce provides a GUI for Windows platforms, all others are command-line. As far as I've seen, Windows programmers are the only ones who require such a crutch; most UNIX programmers will happily begin creating their own scripts, using Emacs macros, etc., within days of being given Perforce. It's happening at my current Perforce installation already. ;^)
