I just started having this problem exactly 10 minutes ago, and would have no idea what the cause might have been until I found this group. I have the same symptoms as above but my setup might be different.
Google desktop 5.5.0709.30344-en-pb (I have no idea when I got that version, maybe 10 minutes ago?)
Outlook 2003 11.8169.8172 SP3
NOT running Exchange - strictly using a local PST file for everything on Outlook. Note that my PST file is just a bit larger than 2 gigabytes. I wonder if the size of the file has something to do with this.
Win XP Pro SP2
Brand-new Dell Precision M4300, with Core2Duo T7300 processor, 2 gb of RAM
If I pause Google desktop search and restart Outlook, I get the same error message after view a couple of emails.
If I EXIT from Google desktop search and restart Outlook, no error message in OL.
Makes me think that if any part of Google desktop search is in memory, whether indexing is active or not, Outlook doesn't like it.
Is it possible that my system only upgraded to this new version of Google Desktop just a few minutes ago? How could I tell?

Hello Every body
I have tried on Office 2003 Sp3 in exchange mode , also in Vista office 2007 with all the scenarios you guys have reported with live GD build.Unfortunately I am unable to repro the issue from our end. But I knew there is some specific thing that is causing you that error. We would like to repro in house so that we can know exactly where the prob is and fix it in the next version.
I have tried on office 2003 Sp3 (Part of Microsoft professional Edition). From the report which Ken mentioned ,it happened on office 2003 Sp3 (part of Microsoft Business Edition).
So I just want to know if this is the environment that is also causing the problem for all of you on xp so that we can try to get this edition and repro it.Any other information which you guys think might help us ,please let us know.
Once again thanks for all the info.

I am experiencing the same problem as described above by others. The first few clicks allow me to read my email and then I receive the "restricted error message." I turned off indexing of email in the Preferences of Google Desktop and I have experienced no problems since. From working with MSOutlook it occurs to me it has something to do with the cached exchange mode, which stores a local .ost file. My guess is a .pst file would have no problems. I would like to reenable email indexing as soon as it it get fixed, but it is unclear if that is going to happen in the near future or should I use the previous version. Also, it would be helpful to include a warning with the download as I spent several days and several hundred dollars trying to remedy the problem only to find out it was Google Desktop search, which updated on my brand spanking new Dell computer automatically.

I "resolved" this problem by rolling back to a previous version of GD:
* Uninstall GD version 5.5.0709.30344-en-pb but keep the indexes * Reboot PC * Download previous version of GD fromhttp://desktop.google.com/previous.html - as at today, version 5.1.709.19590 is downloadable * Install it * It will reindex but continues using the previous index data * Outlook/Exchange problem no longer occurring.
However, clearly the issue still exists with GD version 5.5.0709.30344.
