Yes, your right.

I suppose httpunit didn't. But I confess I have not investigated it in detail ;-). Changing the Stringconstants who were responsible for the blanks, solved the problem for me (almost, I have to check side-effect in our sw now till my vacacation will start in ~120 minutes ;-)).

So it seems to be a problem of out software, allthoug I still cannot explain why this works with a regular Webbrowser.

Afaik browsers encode incorrect urls. When you try for instance: http://www.google.com/search?q=toto titi it changes it to http://www.google.com/search?q=toto%20titi to make the request.
