Which Kernel are you running? Maybe try Con Kolivas' Patchset for servers: http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/

What does zgrep VMSPLIT /proc/config.gz say? free ? cat /proc/vmstat ? Try again without swap (swapoff -a)?
