That's strange. 'make install' should've installed the sendmail as:

-r-s--x--x 1 root daemon 112397 Nov 17 21:10 /usr/lib/courier/bin/sendmail

In your case you might've used the group "courier", instead of "daemon", but the userid should still be root, and the binary should have the setuid bit set.

Did you run 'make install' as root; or perhaps an error occured during "install", and you missed the error message.
