My Debian testing box has the same 1.5.3. So you've got company. :-)

i'm using recompiled maildrop 1.8.1 on Debian sarge about one year, now i'm ready to 2.x ... it's easy: put sid deb-src into sources.list and run apt-get build-dep maildrop; apt-get -b source maildrop ... maybe you must compile courier-authlib, but it's now on backports.org ... with new courier-imap, ...
