i have spent the whole afternoon trying to set up some email address for some hosted domains - this is never normally a problem.

this time however it just would not accept the email...

513 relaying denied

i think i found what caused it - i did not hit carriage return after adding the domain to the /etc/courier/esmtpacceptmailfor.dir/domains file.

i was using the built-in editor that comes with mc (midnight commander).

i added a new-line character (which i normally do out of habit), re-ran makeacceptmailfor, restarted courier and it all worked fine!

unfortunately i can not reproduce the error cos it still worked ok after i took out the CR.

thought i'd post it up to see if this can be checked out further and to save someone else from a long afternoon!

but have to add that courier has been brilliant otherwise and i have been running it for a year or so with no real issues,
